Nothing is wrong enough to stop anything.

Sorry I'm late publishing this morning. This one took more time than I anticipated.

That is not a feeling. It is the governing condition of this moment.

The economy is called “strong,” even as housing costs have outpaced wages for a generation and medical debt touches tens of millions of households. Elections are labeled “secure,” even as a large share of the electorate rejects their outcomes on principle. Institutions are described as “functioning,” even as public trust in nearly all of them continues to fall. The country is not healthy—but it is operational.

Operational, in the same way a car with a cracked frame and a dashboard lit like a Christmas tree is technically still operational—right up until it isn’t.

And as long as it remains operational, we are told, there is no emergency.
