Something Is Coming, and It's Free

This morning in politics is as good as it gets.

The 35 percent are still out there. They haven't changed their minds. They've just been beaten back into their hole for now, and for now will do.

I have a lot of feelings. Most of them are relief. There is gratitude toward my fellow citizens, some leftover anger for what was done, and a confusion that hasn't cleared and may never.

The gratitude is the big one. So I'm going to pay it back.

For weeks I've been working on a present for everyone. I believe one of the things tearing this country in half is that most of us don't understand how it works, or how it was built to work. We fight like hell over a machine nobody read the manual for.

Here's the first page of that manual: the United States is not a democracy. It never was. The men who built it made sure of that, and they wrote down why.

Which means every argument you've had at the dinner table, every cable news shouting match, every "this isn't democracy" and every "yes it is" started from a false premise. Both sides. Wrong from the first word.

I'm fixing that.

No paywall. No subscription. A gift of my work, because today you earned it.

I'm finishing it now. Look for it later today.
