What Mirrors Are For
a coat of paint

There is a kind of water that was never meant to be looked at for its own sake. It was poured long and shallow and still on purpose, so that it would hold the building above it and the sky above that and give them back doubled, and a person walking its length would feel, without being told, that he had come somewhere that asked him to be quiet. That is the whole function of a still surface. It is built to disappear. It earns its keep by showing you everything except itself.
I have been thinking about what it takes to hate a thing like that.
